About The
FBI NATIONAL ACADEMY ASSOCIATES
“In Depth”

The FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. (FBINAA) is a non-profit, international organization of senior law enforcement professionals dedicated to serving our communities and profession with the highest degree of law enforcement expertise, training, and education. Membership in the Association is limited only to those law enforcement leaders who have completed the FBI’s prestigious National Academy Program. The Association has nearly 17,000 members worldwide, and is comprised of forty-eight chapters, the Association’s Executive Board, and the Executive Office.

The Association’s Executive Office is located at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. From its inception in 1935, the FBI National Academy has long been a vital element in the continuing improvement of law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation throughout the world. The National Academy and the FBI National Academy Associates provide a wide range of leadership and specialized training, as well as an opportunity for professional law enforcement officials to interact and network with their counterparts from around the world and to share ideas, techniques, and experiences.

In 1985, the FBI National Academy celebrated its first 50 years. Upon reflection, the institution saw the development of quarterly classes consisting of 10 weeks of training for upper and mid-level law enforcement executives. Four classes of approximately 270 students are held each year. The curriculum focuses on leadership and management training and consists of courses relating to Leadership and Management Science, Behavioral Science, Law, Communication, Intelligence Management and Current Issues. To date, over 42,000 students have graduated from the FBI National Academy.

A mid-upper level law enforcement executive is invited to attend the National Academy Program by the Director of the FBI, upon the recommendation of the Training Coordinator from the local FBI field office and the Training Unit at the FBI Academy. Supervisory officers desiring to attend would need to inform their supervisor.

There are presently three members of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office that have attended and graduated from the Academy; Chief Deputy Rick Perez, 1995, Captain Gary Shankle, 1998, Sheriff Tim Swanson, 1994, President of Ohio Chapter 2005.
